At last there might be safe zones banning assault rifles. Will that soon spread countrywide,hopefully?

I doubt it; many people in many parts of the country actively want to keep them, and the NRA is a legendary lobbying machine. I'd be happy if the US's gun laws were like Canada's, but I think it's true that bad guys wouldn't be the least bit deterred by knowing that City X is an automatic-weapon-free zone.

And having a law against bringing an assault rifle into a "safe zone" will stop someone intent on committing murder or robbery?

Safe zones? More like 'kill zones'. Many of these shootings lately have taken place in areas where ALL guns are supposedly off limits (the wacko at the immigration office in New York in particular). As far as banning 'assault weapons', the last ban was a farce. All it did was state that you could not have a bayonet lug, folding/collapsible stock, or flash hider. Big deal, delete the lug and flash hider, fix the stock in place, its still the same. For that matter the semi-automatic imitations that we are allowed to own are mechanically identical to many hunting rifles, hoplophobes only seek to ban AR and AK clones due to their military appearance.
