Well, it doesn't. That's mainly because the rhyme was originally about King John of England (to hear my history teacher tell it), or King Henry III of England, or some such historical happening, as nursery rhymes generally are. In terms of why people think it's an egg, I've heard that the rhyme was a riddle, and the solution was "an egg." But to me, that makes no sense.

HAHAHA! Do you know that never EVER occurred to me? DUHHH. It has such a profound meaning now that you said that. I have some really cool Humpty Dumpty figures that I just love, and I never saw that little limerick any differently. Thank you.

The insinuation I can see "Humpty Dumpty", as a nursery rhyme, is that there is always a picture of him in the book "Mother Goose", a favorite of children. When parents read this book and show his picture we can truly say he was an egg.
