california does not recognize de facto marriage or 'common-law marriage'. therefore, i dont believe you would have any marital rights.

Squizz is right, no common law marriage. No marital rights per se. However, some courts have held oral contracts could be enforced and I believe there are certain circumstances where the court will find that if one of the partners is "unjustly enriched," that person could be recompensed. I remember reading about it in school about a decade ago. I would head to a law library and look in the pink books (Rutter Guide for family law), I'm pretty sure there's a section discussing this type of thing.
