I don't think everybody would agree. For example, many people would think that Old English - pre-Chaucer - was a simpler and perhaps cruder language than Chaucerian or Shakesperian English. Generally, an older form of a language can sound more poetic simply through its slight unfamiliarity. The language one speaks everyday inevitably sounds banal. And, of course, the only language that lives a long time is great writing. Shakespeare and Chaucer have survived, but the bad poetry, banal plays, and everyday writings of those times have got lost. If you only read the best 0.1% of today's writing, what would you think of it.
