good question, I know you dont have to be to participate in Mardi Gras.

I think you need only to be baptised. Not confirmed... I remember as a kid - even before communion I was allowed to get ashes. Ask your priest.

My family did despite being baptists. i think it occurs in areas wit ha lot of catholic influence.

Ashe Wednesday and Lent are not biblical mandates. They are not created remembrances set forth by GOD, so if you feel like doing it go ahead. If you aren't Catholic they can't tell you how to worship anyway.
