  • Start with the basics - set up your factors ( x + y) ( x - y) You know the signs since the last term is negative. Then factor -12 so that the two factors add up to -2. Just looking at this, I can see no easy solution [since there are not factors of -12 that add to -2], so you need to do two things: 1. verify that you copied this down correctly, and/or 2. use the Quadratic equation.
  • Well to start with you can take a two out of everything. But that's about as far as I can get with it because like the last person said 12 doesn't have any factors that work in this situation. are you sure there wasn't another x there or something?
