I would choose freedom every time. At least if I'm free I have the opportunity to improve my plight.

Why don't you sweeten that deal? Forget just the basic needs, and go whole hog for every single sinful desire fulfilled? You'll get a whole lot more folks willing to live in a totalitarian state if they could get away with it. In poverty, with freedom, a man has a whole lot more to enjoy.
