I don't think they look good laying horizonally, so all of my books are vertical.

I'm not 100% certain but I'd guess that yes, packing them in piles is better than standing them up if you are wanting quantity results.

I guess it would depend on the strength of the shelves. I dont think that however which way you stack your books would matter. If there is to much weight the shelves are going to collapse.

I seem to get better results by combining the two styles. And it looks pretty cool too!! Plus, the kittens have a better obstacle coursemto follow for when they are playing.
-
I think if the shelves are adjusted to the height of the books, it's easier to pack in more books when they are upright, then lying down. It's easier to adjust for height than to come out in book length.

Its all the same. The total volume the shelf can hold is fixed. So whether you pack in rows or stack them up, it holds the same.
-
I think they hold more if you put the books in piles. If you stand them up you usually lose the space above each standing book and the area between the book and the back of the shelf.

You should only buy books of the same height as all your other books, and have the shelves at exactly the same size. If necessary, you can trim books with a table saw so as to conform.
