  • Just say 'et'. From wikipedia: "The symbol is a ligature of the letters in et, Latin for "and". "
  • The symbol & has the name ampersand. Some suggest that this is a corruption of 'et per se' (and by itself) followed by the English translation 'and' hence the phrase 'Et per se: and' worn down to 'ampersand'. I don't know if this is genuine or folk etymology. The pronuciation of &, as has been noted above is 'et' as in 'et cetera' etc, and 'et alia' et al. In very old books you sometimes see &c. for etc.
