  • I just found it very boring, particularly algebra.
  • They just can't do it, they find it difficult and can't understand.
  • I liked math at school , I did applied math in physics and found that interesting but except for mental arithmatic have not found it of much use in my life since. Maybe people hate it because it is a mental mindset.
  • For me there is no room for mistake. It's a set formula and you can't stray from it. I also find it a little tedious and boring. Where as in say, English there is no right or wrong, you use your imagination. But hey, what do I know?
  • i don't like it either.. i would rather make a story or an essay than solve a math equation.. though i really don't know how i did passed all my subjects in college that concerned numbers (accounting, business math, algebra) and its really boring and you need to back from the start if you got a wrong result (bleh!>.<)
  • Because most people aren't intelligent enough to enjoy solving math problems.
  • Because to love maths you need to practice and most people don't want to practice.
  • it's too confusing
  • For me it's to much and I find it hard to understand it - though I can run a register like crazy - When it comes to pen and paper and math I'm lost
  • Maybe because they don't understand it or aren't good at it. I personally love it!
  • Honestly? Because I can't bullshit my way through a math class like I can other classes. You're answer is either right or wrong. If you make one mistake in your calculations, even if you do everything else right, the problem is, you guessed it, WRONG! You have to be precise with Math and this is a problem for unorganized bsers like myself
  • That... I don't Know. I mean, it is easier than English because the English language has rules with so many exceptions... but in math, the rules are very clear and they are hardly no exceptions. But some people just don't "get it" Most of the time it depends on teh teacher.
  • Because it's a language, and like all languages, if you're not competent in communicating in it or understanding it, you turn off!
  • Because the way some middle school teachers teach it, you are likely to drool on your desk while snoring loudly. i swear, if i have find the length of one more hypotenuse...
  • The way it's taught, it isn't being made relevant to people. If people can't understand where something gets applied to real life, they find it boring. A lot of the stuff through Algebra and Pre-Calc are preliminary tools to prepare you for higher maths, where things become more relevant to real life. But most people get turned off to it before then. With Science and English and History, etc., you see right away why you're learning it, even if you don't understand it right away. But math is a process. Wax-on, wax-off. It also requires problem-solving skills which too many people lack.
  • I was a math major in college, and I work with a bunch of math people (some PhDs). I think some people hate it because it can be very abstract... hence, difficult. But it's difficult for math people too. It's sort of like learning juggling tricks with clubs, or learning to play guitar. It takes time to figure out. But it can be really rewarding when the light bulb goes off. Having a good teacher is important too. I think it's okay to hate math, because we need artists, musicians, homebuilders and all types. But just realize that math is somewhat of a challenge for all people. It can take time to "get it." In college, I focused on math and engineering. Now, 21 years after graduating, I'm exploring philosophy and the arts (things I didn't do back then). In college, I didn't really get "reading." It sounds sort of strange now, because I discovered reading about 8 years ago, and really enjoy it. So maybe non-math people will become math people later in life, and all the math people will take up liberal arts.
  • I absolutely love math, because it's not debatable. There's no speculation, there's no "Well maybe the problem means this, or that" it's just simple, provable information.
  • Please don't say the "M" word. ;_;
  • Well, it's all statistics really. You know that 5 out of every 4 people are horrible at fractions.
  • because it makes their brain itch if thats even possible lol
  • Because it hard.
  • Because I suck at it.
  • well sometimes it downright makes your brain hurt!! like mine lol...
  • It takes work.
  • I don't know but I just loved that Inch Worm song Inch worm Inch worm measuring the marigolds You and your arithmetic you'll probably go far..... Come on everyone you know the song join in now.
  • It takes work and demands accuracy.
  • Much of it seems so pointless...
  • I hate counting number, its too hard and tedious, and did I mention I hate counting numbers.....
  • It's difficult
  • Probably because it is challenging. I myself like it.
  • i hate door maths they get so dirty, table maths are ok but rubber maths in your car are best.sorry i have a lisp you understand
  • Partly because it is not to everyone's taste. But I think a lot of people who might enjoy it are put off because the introduction is arithmetic, one of the most boring bits of maths, albeit very useful in everyday life. If you went to a restaurant and the only starter was dry toast, would you go in, even if the other coursed were marvelous? But that is the way maths is taught.
  • People hate math because they have most likely had a bad or series of bad math teachers, and don't understand certain concepts, and feel like they aren't able to learn new concepts because the previous concepts aren't clear. So its a domino affect. If they miss something, then its tough luck and the class goes onward and they get left behind. So frustration in learning leads to disliking math. I hold a math degree, and I can read math books to entertain me. I love it. But I HATE statistics. Statistics is very different from other maths. Its the only math topic that I can say I have no interest in , and for htis reason, I understand people's dislike for math. I have had horrible professors in Statistics, and have a very vague understanding of it. If anyone would like to discuss this more, msg me on myspace or something. myspace.com/typhoonikan :)
  • Because it is a horrible drug, one hit and you are hooked Especially crystal math.
  • Man often hates what he does not understand.
  • It doesn't appeal to me, I find it useless (school level math is useful but it gets really pathetic at college LOL). I score good at math but I prefer stuff which is interesting like physics, biology, history, geography etc. math is just bunch of numbers.
  • I can't stand numbers... I never had one decent math teacher in school. They were intelligent but couldn't teach worth shit
  • I don't know, it just doesn't add up.
  • I LOVE math! At the moment, I'm hooked on fractals....big mathematical process. Some people's minds don't process logics very well and with so many numbers and things to do with them, many people get confused.
  • because it makes them think.
  • Because subtraction sucks. (especially when it comes to money.)
  • It make brain hurt.
  • I don't know. I always found it very satisfying to find a precise solution to a complicated problem. I didn't care for geometric proofs until I took a course in Philosophy then it made sense. I liked Calculus but sucked at and hated physics. Everyone quotes Statistics but nobody understands how easily the can be manipulated. Math is pretty damn cool if you know how to apply it. I think the problem is that Mathematics is taught in a bubble were the application for it isn't applied.
  • i think its a sort of stereotype, alot of movies, magazines etc talk about how maths is difficult and children who are exposed to this before they even start school get an idea that maths is hard and this carries on through the rest of their education.I think this is what happens
  • people hate math because they don't understand it. They don't undersatnd that maths is what they need to do well in life. Maths Rule
  • #1. because its sometimes hard and people dont get it or #2 America is just getting lazy anymore im not saying all americans but quite a majority no offense to any of you guys im an american and i admit i can get lazy at times!
  • I have had very painful experiences in childhood and shed many tears because of that stupid subject. Sometimes I'm tempted to think that i'm dumb because i'm not good at math. My math teacher told me I had no number sense. I hate math because theres no emotion, no life, no creative juice in it. Its just plugging in a bunch of numbers.Alot of it is pointless. I tried to major in something where I only had to take the minimum amount of math.
  • I honestly think people are just to lazy to use their brains. they rely on Calculators, computers, other people.. so the thought gets into their head that they cant do it.. try..try harder
  • beacuse it's hard to be good at...
  • Because it's a waste of time. The only people that use the more advanced math concepts are math teachers and mathematicians. What's the point. Some math is useful, but the stuff they teach in high school seems useless.
  • because it is basically logic applied and a lot of people will avoid logic at all costs. I love math it comes to me really easily for some reason.
  • The only possible cause is bad teachers. People good at math become smart people. Smart people go to high paying jobs and not teaching elementary and middle school children.
  • People will hate anything that is challenging, it's those people who come to enjoy the experience of solving a problem who really succeed. It also comes to what you were born with. I grew up with a learning disability and no matter how a teacher instructed, I was embarrassed to ask questions because I was so far behind everyone's common knowledge that I actually hated math altogether, but I loved when I would solve them. it's about being too lazy to learn, and working through disabilities. Not everybody can be a math wiz
  • I believe it has to do with study skill and learning style. Math involves alot of writing and practices. If you simply read and memorise formulae and techniques, you will not be able to handle math. Math deals with strategies and clear step-by-step planning to compute for answers. Thus, studying for math requires a unique learning style which if not followed, make math a stressful subject to manage. • Because it is hard for them to understand.
  • Non-math people are a product of irrelevant teaching. We remember ONLY what we need to survive or enjoy. Outside of basic functions, higher math is viewed as entirely abstract and irrelevant to real life. We forget useless or dull stuff as soon as the course is over. The only other way we get math is exactly like learning a second language--practice, practice, practice--until it is automatic and doesn't require concentration. You hate math? You were probably robbed in middle school.
