Yup, been whittling for over 30 years now. I'm a member of a woodcarving club in central Florida. Here's a couple of my whittlin's.

Yup. I dont whittle. For relief I start with a router and fine tune with chisels. For chair arms i start with a bandsaw on the piece and shape it in a fixed belt/table sander.

Yes I do and it is my favorite hobby. I use patterns I buy from the Internet, then transfer them and photocopy to the desired size. Then I cut the piece of wood to the desired size and I begin carving until the piece is finished, my tools are Japanese. When finished and depending on what it is I usually use plated bone, plated semi precious stones, mother pearl, gold or silver thin plates to decorate each piece and finally use two coats of translucent lacquer to finish it. No and that is something Ihave always wanted to do, but I just carve the wood away into nothing.
