Not necessarily. Sometimes excommunication has been handed down for as little as pissing off a high ranking member of the priesthood. Recently a gentleman did a genetic analysis of North American Indians. He did so with the intent of discovering Jewish genetic traits. He was flabbergasted to discover not one Jewish genomre anywhere in the Amerindian genome. And so he prepared to publish his findings. The church came very close to excommunicating him for that publishing. There are many anecdotes from those who apostasized AFTER they were excommunicated: http://exmormons.org/
