Not a whole lot really . . . they are both forms of promotion: promotion |prəˈmÅ sh É™n| noun 1 activity that supports or provides active encouragement for the furtherance of a cause, venture, or aim : disease prevention and health promotion. • the publicization of a product, organization, or venture so as to increase sales or public awareness. • a publicity campaign for a particular product, organization, or venture The definitions show a bit of a difference but it kind of depends on how you look at it; I suppose they overlap a bit: propaganda |ËŒpräpəˈgandÉ™| noun chiefly derogatory information, esp. of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view. advertising |ˈadvÉ™rËŒtÄ«zi ng | noun the activity or profession of producing advertisements for commercial products or services to describe or draw attention to (a product, service, or event) in a public medium in order to promote sales or attendance The differences that separate them are that one deals with 'retail' sales and the other sells a cause or point of view. Technically the derogatory info. of a misleading nature is supposed to apply to propaganda but I think we can safely say that it isn't always the case. :) Wow, that's as clear as mud! :P

Propaganda is political (or religious). Advertising is commercial. There's not much difference beyong that. You may even say that propaganda is advertisement of ideas or that advertisement is commercial propaganda. Degratory information of a misleading nature may or may not apply to both propaganda and advertisement.

Advertising is usually an effort to sell directly to consumers a product or service. Propaganda is a message whose intent is to change (or reinforce) beliefs and attitudes. Advertising may get you to buy a car or watch a TV show and Propaganda may get you to support a political candidate and support or oppose a union. I hope this helps.

Bias is slanting coverage in an arena where the reader incorrectly assumes only facts will be presented. Bias can be subtle, such as totally ignoring certain points of view, or it can be visibly present, such as a question being asked "When did you stop beating your wife?" Propaganda is the presentation of opinion (and falsehoods) toward a goal while being represented as fact. Advertising is a paid message in the media, in a setting where bias and propaganda are assumed to be present.
