Why is it that January and February have to be so depressing with all the cold weather and snow that they bring to the northern latitudes?

Old mothers natures way of saying, in order to fully appreciate the good weather I have to give you a taste of the bad.

Some people are affected by the shorter days as in fewer hours of daylight. SAD - seasonal affective disorder is fairly well known to actually cause a chemical inbalance in some. Less suslight and cold which causes many people to curtail whatever exercise and less social interaction is very hard for some to deal with. Colder days also causes many to tense up making their muscles and joints sore plus more time indoors expouses you to more of other peoples germs. So with all of that it really amazing that anyone makes it to spring - but I'll bet you do. +5 - feel better?

You describe what we humans make of cycles of nature. Under the coat of ice and snow our lovely spring landscapes are sleeping ...they just can't wait till the sun shines warmer and the seeds come to life. What would it be like without any seasons - boring?

I find this year very depressing, too much snow and cold. Guess it's just a fact of life in the northeast and there's no escaping it unless we want to pack up and move.

    Yarnlady is happy every day

With some exceptions as stated elsewhere, the depression you refer to is an attitude that many people choose to adapt.

My birthday is in January, and it makes me very happy, all my Hubby's family has their birthday in February, so we have a huge birthday blast in February, and everybody is happy.

    Done. never again.

It's not that depressing. You get used to the cold. Once March comes around (remember Feburary is only 28 days) it's like a warm weather reunion.

Speak for yourself my friend. Jim and I think January and February are beautiful. We don't like hot weather..we think triple-digit temperatures week after week are depressing with all the extreme heat and discomfort they bring with them. Different strokes...:)

    Shadow is Gone

Living here in SoCal, where the sun always shines, we have to read about that in newspapers and library books, but I think it's because of the lesser amount of light during the winter months.
