Polygamy is a culturally recognised union, for the purpose of reproduction, of more than two people.

Polygyny is a form of polygamy with one man and multiple women (gyny).

Polyandry is a form of polygamy with one woman and multiple men (andry). This is very rare and is usually practised as 'fraternal polyandry' where a mans wife will mate with his brothers and/or his male cousins.

polygamy = having more than one spouse at a time

polygyny = the mating of a single male with several females

polyandry = a breeding system in which one female mates with two or more males. Some birds are polyandrous. An example is the Brown-headed Cow Bird.
