Honestly. I would attend film school. Because after you graduate you can probably find a great job and produce excellent movies

It depends on how inspired you are. If you are a hard working, determined, and brilliant person, then you should follow the paths of Rodriguez and Tarantino and go without film school. I stress, however, that the people who can pull this off are in the scarce minority, and all share an unwavering knowledge that they have the talent to make this film right. If you're less that convinced that you can actually make a good film for $80,000, then I'd recommend film school.

If you go to film school, you'll graduate having made SEVERAL films, and you will have used their professional equipment rather than having to buy/rent your own. You will have had professional guidance and critique along the way and you will have had access to numerous budding actors, sound people, editors who will likely have collaborated for free. Have a look at George Lucas' student film some time: THX1138

Youtube is filled with low budget "films" from people who didn't see the value of a good education. If you'd like to join those folks, go ahead, but if you want to become a serious filmmaker, go to school.

MAAAAAAN, YOU ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY!!!

Definitely attend film school, but don't spend all of that money. If the film school you're looking at costs $80 grand, find another! There are cheaper alternatives. With the money you have left over, try cutting a few shorts and enter them in film festivals. Also, people are always willing to invest or donate money toward the arts.

I wish you the absolute best, my friend!

I would shoot the movie. Film school is more about contacts then anything else. You can get contacts if you shoot the movie. In fact you'll need to.

Wing it, you will probably learn more by doing, but it will not be cheap.

    Goodness go to film school!

You learn how to make films through trial and error, shoe-string-budget films are the best way to start, besides if you mess up your first film (which I did) you'll be mege-bummed at spending all that money, the expereince you gain at film school is vital :)

Plus, if people see you've been to film school, they might hire you to work on their films so you can spend THEIR money ;)
