It is never too late. Just make sure that if they are really late you apologize for taking so long and explain that you were busy.

It is absolutely never too late, but it's considered polite to get them out any time in the first year after the wedding itself. And you know what? Just saying "thank you" is more important than explaining why you were late, so only explain if you want to. What means more to people is to know that their gift is being used and appreciated, so mention that if you can.

It is appropriate to send your note of thanks as soon as possible, and never later than three months after the wedding. (Of course, if three months comes and you have not yet sent them, DO IT! Late is better than never!) Your promptness shows more appreciation and better manners, and it reassures guests that their gift was not lost or stolen.
