  • Originally, steam rollers were powered by steam. In fact, many of the early ones looked very similar to a steam tractor or steam locomotive engine. Since they were invented around the time of the automobile boom, they have been a staple of road construction since the beginning and have just never lost the name. Well, to be honest, they DID lose the name. Technically, they are now called "road rollers" but most of us grew up calling them steam rollers.
