  • My ancestors came to America after that. My great grandparents were the first to set foot here.
  • No. I am first generation American. However, my son's father comes from important stock..Ralph Waldo Emerson is a relative. His mother was an Emerson. She was a member of the DAR. So I'm sure something on that end might crop up. On his father's side..well, our surname is among those on the Arc de Triomphe..when my son was in Paris for a couple of days in Septembet 2001 he toured the area and couldn't believe his eyes..he took a picture of our name engraved thereon..quite a surprise. My ex-husband comes from very important stock..so, too, by birth, does my son! :)
  • My husband has ancestors who fought in every war this country has been in,including the Jamestown massacre of 1622 and both sides of the Civil War.He's found service records, church burial records, census records, ship's manifests and The Virginia Company. His family goes way back. It's pretty interesting to see how far you can go.
  • My mom always told us we were descendants of Stonewall Jackson. But never looked into it.
  • Both. My aunt had some service records for our family members in the Civil War even though many records from both wars were destroyed in the Civil War. Several of my ancestors, according to family history, served in the Revolution. My closest relative in the Civil War was my grandfather's father.
  • I have records for ancestors on both sides of the Civil War, including one Confederate doctor in an Arkansas regiment. I have service records for a couple of them. In the Revolution, on my mom's side I have one ancestor whose brother signed the Declaration of Independence and several who served in the Continental Army. On my dad's side was a tavern owner in Virginia who hid arms for the minutemen in the tavern basement while British regulars were enjoying a pint right above. No service records, just family stories and records. One of my cousins has some records.
  • Yes. On my fathers side of the family, we had ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War. The females of the family are either DAR members, or have declined membership. (I declined membership). Will explain that to anyone who might want to hear, but it really belongs in another question forum.
  • A ggggg grandfather and his brothers fought in the Revolutionary War. They were free mulattoes who were enumerated in the censuses as "Free Persons of Color." The only documentation I have is from the work of Paul Heinegg, who has published several books on free African Americans in the Carolinas and Virginia. A ggg grandfather and his brothers fought on the side of the Union in the Civil War. I have a copy of his service records. They were actually descendants of the man who fought in the Revolutionary War. One ggg grandfather likely fought on the side of the Confederacy, but I haven't yet located his records or ascertained that he actually fought in the war although it is likely as he was a landed slaveowner who cohabited with my ggg grandmother, his mistress.
  • I do not think so but I collect a lot of crap like that. For all I know I might have something from the civil war that belonged to the family of an ABer. The only member of my family that was in a major war that I am aware of was a guy that was a B-29 bomber during WWII. He went MIA in January of 1945.
  • I know that my mother's family has been in Virginia since before the Civil War, but no details. My father's side came from the Netherlands shortly after and were always in Northern New Jersey.
  • No my grandparents are from Canada and Italy
