Soccer will never truly succeed in the US. The sport is not made for American TV. There are low scores, few high light reel moments, no commercial breaks and David Beckham and all that aside, no real star power.
Soccer fans can get satisfaction simply from a well placed pass, a close shot, or worst of all, the zero-zero tie. Can you imagine a 0-0 game being recapped on ESPN? Soccer just doesn't fit into American sports culture.
Probably not. If it does it will still be a long time coming. Many Americans like games with lots of points if not they get bored.
I would say that it is already popular in the USA. Not as popular as many other sports such as football, basketball, or baseball, but still popular. Especially in recent times the popularity has boosted dramatically.
As popular as it is in the rest of the world? I doubt it. Just like American Football will never surpass soccer in popularity overseas. I do think that soccer will become more popular as time goes on. If MLS can keep signing major stars, and if enough kids play little league soccer and grow up passionate for the sport, it could become a profitable and popular sport in the US.
Well didn't some LA soccer team just sign on Posh Spices Husband (can't remember his name) that might start to make it a little more appealing. But I happen love watching the World Cup, and it was fun while I was in Europe and the Euro was going on I think Italy won when I was over there
Possibly, When big name sponsors, coaches and businesses decide to make money in soccer, then and only then will it compete in popularity with baseball and football.
I think that American football has cast a shadow over all of the other major league sports out there. Some of them have their moments in the off season, but none of them really reach the popularity that American football has.
So no, I do not think soccer/football will ever be hugely popular in the US. We're Amercans, we have to do things the weird way. No metric system or actual football for us. =P
I suspect not. It just doesn't have the TV exposure it has elsewhere in the world.
