Seems to me like a responsible and honest thing to do, but ask your fiance his opinion. He'll have a better idea whether his parents feel comfortable discussing it in front of you.

Yeah, if they hand him a ladder and tell him to "elope" it might be uncomfortable.

No. I was in the same boat with my fiance, as 80% of the guest list was from his side. I freaked out that we'd never be able to afford that kind of expense. He sat his parents down alone and explained the situation. Because it was just him and them, there was no pressure to save face or not react as they'd like because someone else was there.
