Roberta is correct. See the answer on kidneys to gain some insight. Often the kidneys and liver need to be maintained together. It can be stressful on a liver if the kidneys are not up to par. Cayenne can be good for the liver. Ginger can be good. Lots of vegetables and variety of foods always help. A balanced diet goes a long, long, ways. That is crucial for the liver. Again, a healthy diet and lifestyle and cheerful demeaner assist the body and its organs. Eat right. Fresh vegetables. I should mention that the probiotics of fresh vegetables alone can help a person. In other words, when eating fresh greens, you can obtain beneficial microbes in a way that is similar to yogurt's beneficial microbes. Not being exposed to solvents or alcohols (including rubbing alcohol) is important for liver health. You will see some data on some of my other posts. Alcohol and solvents are hard for the liver to process. These encourage other organisms to invade the liver. The liver is a vital organ. There is an affiliation with the liver and gallstones. Drinking an ounce or two of olive oil at bed time on an occassional basis can help to relieve some stresses regarding this subject. It will eliminate gallstones. Taking herbs for parasites on occasion will certainly help the liver.

Milk Thistle, False Unicorn root (also used for normalizing menstruation), Fennel seed, dandelions, burdock, and licorice. I believe there's been some small studies on milk thistle; they weren't very well done but they did show that it had a positive effect on the liver. You can read about it here, if you want: http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/epcsums/milktsum.htm
