My wife is a teacher and a good one at that (no biases there). There are good teacher and bad teacher, the bad ones need to be fired or retrained whatever the case maybe. School need to be graded on a better grading system. Dump the no child left behind, it has been proven to fail (look at nyc). PARENTS NEED TO CARE ABOUT THERE KIDS EDUCATION. It really is pathetic that kids have put in such little effort into learning, and they havent realized it is only hurting themselves.

you go to school for 13 years! why do you even need college? they should be teaching you everything you need to know in that time. why is it that so many highschool graduates have the education of Jethro Bodine (beverly Hillbillies) america should be ashamed of the performance of our schools.

Although there are problems with our education system, the fact that a student cannot write his/her name or find their country on a map is more of a reflection on the parents than on the school system. I'm convinced that you can have the crappiest teacher in the crappiest school system, but if you take the time to read with your kids, check their homework, correct them when they need correction, and talk about what is going on in the world, they will succeed in school.

One of the problems is that ther is too much emphasis placed on the college education (putting the cart before the horse). There seems to be this belief that going to college will solve all the problems of a poor basic education and make the student smart.

The commercial you see is inaccurate in its reporting. Yes, other countries' students do better in testing. HOWEVER, they test ONLY the advanced students whereas we test everyone--including special ed students. In fact, in those other countries, only the top students move up to academic "high schools." All the others go to trade schools. So, in reality, the commercial is comparing apples to oranges. Put OUR top students against theirs, and I bet we would beat them hands down.
