As Simon Amstell says in Never Mind the Buzzcocks when refering to Katy Perry's song You're so gay:
"It sounds homophobic but of course she's using the other fashionable version of the word meaning anything generally bad and anyone who thinks that sounds offensive should just jew off and stop being so bloody black about it"

a fanny pack is the most ungay thing ever.

gays have been described as fashonable, and fanny packs are not!

Hideous would be a better term.

When people use "gay" to mean "stupid," "worthless," "ridiculous," or some other insult, they are being immature and lazy at best, and cruel at worst. What if "American" became associated with "obesity," "arrogance," "superstition," "selfishness," and "low intelligence"? Imagine hearing someone using "American" as an insult about something, but then telling an American person who took offense, "Oh, I wasn't talking about American people, just that disgusting bag strapped to that woman's hip. She used half her welfare check to buy it at Wal-Mart, no doubt, and can probably stash a ham in it." Don't you think that would be offensive?

There are plenty of words to express disdain/disapproval/scorn without equating gay people with worthlessness and stupidity.

There is no such thing as "just" a word.

Words are a combination of sound vibrations which resonate differently with each individual.

    Words are creative and destructive.

They represent ideas which evolve into positive or negative actions.

One of the most juvenile perspectives of man today is we have no real comprehension of how much power we wield with words. We use them casually and bear no responsibility for the consequences of the power we unknowingly unleash.

How ARE you supposed to describe a fanny pack?

Why not just OBSERVE it or USE it?
    -

Allow IT to define ITSELF through it's function...

...and occasionally THINK about what you say before you say it.

I know! Why do people get so worked up about words like "gay" being used as an insult? They're overly sensitive. They should be like you, and not be offended by being referred to as an ignorant, uneducated, slope-browed, knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing douchebag. I mean, I know you wouldn't be offended if I were to call you a regressive, pop-collared ignoramus or an obese, basement-dwelling toad who probably smells of sweaty, unwashed socks and Cheetos, so screw them queers if they can't take a joke, eh?

The N word is just a word too, but we don't use it anymore. Gay doesn't mean stupid or dumb, but pepople use it in that manner, it's like homosexuality is being represented by a word that is steadily growing a negative connotation. If we said that everything that was bad or stupid was straight, people wouldn't use it.

"I'm also making a big deal out of this for a reason. Because the real homophobes need to change their ways, I would love the bash their heads in personally. But also, a lot of homosexuals are dreaming of a reality of acceptance that will never come true."

What YOU have to understand is that us gay folks know that. Some people like us and some people don't. We spend a whole lot of time figuring out who's who. How to tell the difference?

One way is to make very careful note of anyone who uses the word "gay" as a synonym for stupid or freaky or wierd. It may not mean that they actually hate our guts, but I hope people who do that don't sit around holding their breath waiting for us to say "Thank you for your support."

It's a free country. You can say whatever you want. But when you're saying something, you should have an idea of how other people are hearing it.

    We're gay. We're not stupid.

Sure they're talking about gay people. They're using a word that describes gay people and deciding that's a good way to say the think something is "stupid," "ridiculous," "tacky," or "bad."

If you see something that is stupid, ridiculous, tacky, or bad and the word that pops into your head, and comes out of your mouth, is "gay," what exactly are gay people supposed to think?

I'd go with "dorky" on the fanny pack description.

You describe it using words that are not bigoted and hurtful.

If you want to say it's effeminate, or stupid, or pointless, or not very useful, or silly, or handy, or compact, those are all perfectly acceptable words, and much better than resorting to an intentional slur against LGBT people.

    redcatt63 is around here somewhere......

A lot of people around your age have grown up learning that "gay" means stupid, lame, bad, etc. The problem is is that those people who starting using "gay" to mean something bad did so because they associate being gay as being "bad." Maybe if you were in our shoes, hearing people use that word in that context, you'd understand.
In the meantime, as Blackberry has already suggested, say what you really mean. Fanny packs look lame, silly, ridiculous. How's that?

Ha ha ha ha ha you are so funny. I never thought after reading your question you would have turned this into a "Gay looking Fanny Pack" Well in life people will get offended by all sorts of things we say and do. Honestly when I think something is stupid like "Fanny Packs" I would also say "That is so gay" And if someone took offense to that term then too bad because "Gay" actually means happy ! Go figure !

As stupid, ugly, cute, useful, funny looking or practical.
I agree with you about the use of the word gay though. It is just a word, and like the word queer, it had a very useful meaning not so many years ago. They could be used in conversation and have no referrence to homosexuality.

the word 'gay' is NOT a synonym for the word 'stupid'.

it IS however, a synonym for the word 'happy' or 'joyful'.

when you use gay to mean something is stupid, you're implying 1 of 2 things, or both.

-that everyone who is gay is stupid.

    -that being gay is stupid.

i will gladly prove both of those wrong for you if i must.

there are a lot of alternate words that you could use instead of gay..

for starters... you could just try saying stupid?
    -lame
    -ugly
    -rediculous

    just to name a few.

LOL. Good one. You could always say, "that's so straight!"

Just kidding. I'd just go with "tacky," "dorky," or "stupid."

You can explain to people that the general rule is that it's rude to take a word that's used to describe a group of people and use it as a synonym for "bad," or "stupid."

If everything were "just a word" there would be no languages at all. Words are symbols used to convey meaning. Language functions because we all respect this fact. If you want to say that a fanny pack is as foolish as a dude in drag, than just come out and say that. But please don't say it's gay. I've never been hit on by one and it's not exactly a happy thing either.
