Harry Houdini did 100's of tricks during his career, he was a professional magician performing in theaters all over the u.s.a. It was only later in his career that he found that being an escape artist proved more lucrative. This was mainly due to Harry "bigging up" every escape he did, ever the showman this is what eventually led to his fame and fortune. It was said there was "no lock, jail, or building that could hold Houdini" this pr was probably made up by Harry himself, a true showman. http://www.houdinitricks.info
