Diesel engines use compression ignition. The battery is solely to engage the starter motor and provide the power for the glow plugs. Once the engine is running, the pressure in the cylinders heats the mixture until it ignites, without a spark.

Diesel motors don't use spark, although they so have 'glow plugs' for low temp starting. The battery is for the electrical system and the starter motor. Petroleum products ignite when compressed in the presence of oxygen. That's why it's also dangerous to grease the regulator for an acetylene gas welding setup.

some semi's use air starters and only need batteries and alternators to run light gauges radio etc
