I think peoples lasting happiness changes for various reasons, at various times during their lives, what may make some one happpy at one point, may seem inconsequential at a latter point, so even with compassion , your own attempt at giving some one else lasting happiness may be futile. Better to concentrate on happiness from within oneself, which can then be transcended outwards !! :)

My mother gave me unconditional love growing up, and I tried very hard to return that to her for her last six years as she slowly died of cancer. I'm still trying to do that for my husband, daughter and many friends. I can't say I even approach doing a good job at it, but I try every day.

Sounds suspiciously like what a martyr does. Submerge, suppress, sublimate him/herself for the "beloved". No..I don't do martyr well. When my son was growing up I put his needs first..because that is what parents do. However, I don't fancy myself a long-suffering, all-loving human being. That is for those who enjoy that role..I don't! :)
