Yes it is possible--with some advanced technology. This technology is microtubules. Actually, microtubules have been around for thousands of years. Your cells have microtubules to keep their shape. They are extremely, extremely strong, and the cable you are talking about would be made of this material. The only problem is, scientists have yet to find a cheap way to manufacture these microtubles. Currently, they can make it, but it costs way to much to make the elevator viable. But if they were able to find a cheaper way to make it, the elevator would be possible. It would probably by powered by a solar array. However, this solar array would be pointed toward earth, where a large laser would shine onto it, providing the elevator with power.
