  • Well I think "financial responsibility" should be mandatory, as it is in California (you either have to have insurance or post a bond if you have deep enough pockets). Auto accidents are a part of life, we're not going to get rid of them. The costs have to be borne appropriately, and being able to demonstrate that basic liability costs will be covered is a reasonable requirement for drivers.
  • In Australia it is,and is paid annualy when the Vehicle registration is due, its an offence to drive an unregistered vehicle, and its well policed through the use of different coloured registration tags for each month, pld registration stickers stand out. Its a good thing.
  • Yeah it is not in Australia and I think it should be. I have been rear ended by an uninsured person and I have had an accident when uninsured. It is a major pain in the rear end. Expensive and stressful. Now I have third party extended. When I get my new car I will have full comprehensive insurance.
  • NO I think everyone should be responsible enough to carry their own insurance. Why should I have to pay to be insured when someone won't pay to get insured. It's a screw to those of us who want and have insurance.
  • I think it should be as compulsory as health insurance.
  • It is, isn't it? It certainly is in Europe. How else can you protect yourself against getting a huge bill that you can't afford to pay if you accidentally cause injury or damage to somebody or something else?
  • Unless every person on the road has enough money to pay for the $40k car they hit, the $75k hospital stay or the $500k death that they cause, I'd say that mandatory 3rd party coverage is kind of a no brainer. The real question should address why the state minimum limits for 3rd party coverage are so low.
