  • Not really. Professional philosophers, different from just someone on their couch just thinking of things, take into account history, and the current status of the world as it is to come up with their philosophies. I think it is a beneficial thing to practice.
  • Think about it, what is philosophy if not bullshit and what is a philosopher if not a bullshiter with big words that even he can't understand. What else could you possibly expect? I once knew a guy who was majoring in philosophy and his dream/plan was to open up a liquor store, WTF? Well, that's about all you can do with a degree in philosophy: open up a liquor store so you can philosophize with the winos!
  • like what? there problems are unusually non-scientific, and a lot of philosophers base their ideas around basic laws of physics... quantum physics...
  • Just what philosophers are you reading? Philosophy is trying to make sense out of the world based upon the same thing that science does - observation. Science, like philosophy, is just conjecture and jargon.
  • Interestingly enough, this is actually a claim of one 20th century philosopher by the name of Ludwig Wittgenstein. He claims that several (not all) so called major philosophical problems that have plagued modern philosophy are created not by a legitimate dilemma but by a misunderstanding and misuse of language, specifically in the fields of epistemology and Metaphysics. His book "On Certainty" is really interesting.
