  • The reason that eggs are placed pointy side down is because it keeps them fresh longer as the egg yolk stays centered.Always store them this way in the refrigerator and always in a sealed box,as this way they will last up to 14 days and maybe longer.
  • Your eggs will last up to 21 days in the fridge.Do you feed them on Maize and Wheat? My dad used to feed them with a wet mix called layers mash.He also used to give them ground up sea shells to help with their food digestion and to help form the egg shells. If you have an agricultural seed shop nearby they will be able to advise you on feeds etc.As you are in Canada you should have no problem buying your grain and mash in bulk.Dad was lucky as he had a friend on the railway who used to clean out the grain wagons,so he got his free.
  • Which point?
  • So they look bigger
  • The pointy end as you say is stronger then the the rounded is. They are placed in cartons like this to keep them from breaking so easy during shipping. It also works out well when removing the eggs as a bigger surface to grab the egg to keep from dropping it.
  • Do they? i never realised.
  • Because pointy side up is just dumb?
  • Eggs are a staple food all over the world. Apparently, the average American eats about 250 eggs per person, per year, (I'm sure I eat more than that.) and the average hen lays about 250 eggs per year. So somewhere out there, there is one hen whose sole purpose is to provide me with my eggs. Nutritional perks: Eggs are an excellent source of protein, riboflavin, vitamin B-12 and phosphorus, which promotes healthy bones. They also contain vitamins A, D and E. Eggs are also a terrific source for many of the minerals the body needs, including iodine, which is used to make the thyroid hormone; zinc, which helps the body fight infection and heal wounds; calcium; and the antioxidant selenium. One large egg has about 76 calories. Most of the calories — about 59 — as well as the nutrients, are in the yolk, while the white contains the bulk of the sodium. Before you place them in the fridge, turn over every egg pointy side down. It will make the egg last longer by moving the air bubble and helps keep the yolk centered.
  • It's because of the air sack or pocket that is in the egg is at the rounded end. So you keep this end up and it helps the egg retain it's moisture, keeps the yolk more in the center of the white and also reduces breakage of the point which is where the white or the liquid insides of the egg would be. you don't want to place an egg with the air pocket down as you would be asking for a new space to form in the pointy end. If you are collecting your own eggs and are going to be storing them short term, it really doesn't matter which direction they are, even on their sides in a basket or bowl. But commercially they store eggs up to 5-6 months long and for them it's important to store them correctly. Now if you want to store your own eggs for a long time, like if your hens are laying like crazy, then take a little care in which end is which and and you can store the eggs in cartons near the bottom of your fridge for 2-3 months or longer with little trouble. The yolk and white won't be as perky, but then often store bought eggs aren't either, like when eggs go on sale and all your yolks are fragile and the whites go swimming all over your skillet lol!!!
