Actually the Cuban embargo was placed into effect because the Cuban government took the property of American citizens and busnesses without any compensation to them. Basically, they said "Your property, business, and all your assets tied up with it is now the property of the Cuban government and you can't do anything about it: neener-neener-neener!" Actually, this in NOT entirely true. Cuba DID offer compensation (20 year bonds at a 4.5% interest rate), but it was rejected by the American businesses. I imagine Cuba didn't much care about American interests, since we owned 60% of the sugar industry and imported 95% of the remaining Cuban export crop and was most likely viewed as exploitation. Their were also additional political concerns with respect to Cuba's relations with the former Soviet Union. Ultimately, the combination of business and the Cuban-Soviet relations resulted in the total embargo. Good question though. It made me think a little bit! +5
