Seriously, I count backwards from 100, over and over, to clear my residual thoughts. Try it, let me know if it works for you. My dad meditates on the alphabet, in reverse.

This is probably going to sound weird, but what I do is fantasize a story when I'm trying to get to sleep, and I'm not speaking sexually. For example, I'm a rich person living in Tahiti and I can do whatever I want to and be whoever I want to be. It seems like when I make up these fantasies, there's no room for my real life issues to be in my head at the same time. Works for me every time.

I wish I could answer that for you because then maybe I could take my own advice. When I lay down to sleep thats when I start thinking and I can never stop. I am a raging insomniac.

Like catlovr said, tell yourself a story! You're the star; you can do whatever you want. Chances are, you'll be distracted from the racing thoughts that are keeping you awake, and you'll be able to drift off peacefully. Another thing to do is practicing breathing exercises. Put your hands on your stomach and lie flat on your back. Close your eyes. Inhale through your nose deeply and slowly, making sure you feel your belly rise as you're drawing in more air. Then, slowly and as smoothly as possible, exhale through your mouth. You'll feel your muscles relax as you're exhaling. The last thing I can suggest is a yoga relaxation technique I learned a long time ago. Lie on your back with your eyes closed. Starting with your toes and working up your body, tense your muscles and slowly relax. So you would start with your toes and your ankles would be next. Then your calves, etc, you get the picture. Make sure you are breathing evenly as you are doing this. By the time you get to your facial muscles, you should be feeling very calm and relaxed! Hope these tips help.

Try meditation: close your eyes, breathe slowly and deeply and focus on your breath as you inhale and exhale, consciously keeping out all other thoughts. After a few minutes the chattering in your mind will reduce.

Pop a few benadryl. Or maybe some hydrocodone, they always work for me. But I wouldn't make this a habit.
