Don't sit at your regular desk every time, sit next to the girls you like. Talk with them. Look at them when appropriate, making sure not to stare. After you're talking with them and looking at them, it becomes much harder to explain the subtleties of flirting. You answered your question in your question ;)

Try for some one-on-one time with a girl instead of in a class/group setting - it might be easier for you. Ask a girl for help or for her to review/critic your art portfolio or ask her if she would be able to help you out by sitting for a portrait that you will be drawing/paining then use the time to talk to her and get to know her. When talking to a girl don't stare but maintain eye contact. Smile. Don't stutter. and make small talk use art as a conversational piece since you and her have at least a love of art.

You have two options in life. Take risks and maybe, if things go your way, you'll benefit from it. or you can be safe and never know what you've missed. It's up to you, but when I choose, I tend to pick the former, it's not like it's going to kill me, and I might just have fun. '

Admire their work, artsy girls can wear cool unique clothes and jewelry and you can score big points by noticing their little embellishments which many times is hand made by them. Artists can be introverted and use art to express themselves and you may find they are just as shy as you. Most women respond to attention, give a little and you may have some phone numbers to call.

Be very generous in your compliments to the girls you like - girls dig guys who can appreciate them, and make them feel beautiful. You won't be laughed at as long as you keep things positive, and just be yourself. Have a good time.
