On my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix, the steering column is locked. I can get the key in, but can't move it at all. What's wrong?

That is normal if with almost every vehicle. Put the key in the ignition. Try turning the steering wheel a little. I should move just a little bit. With it turned slightly, turn the key. The column will unlock at this point.

This could also be your gear selector not being in park totally or as I said above about Pontiac's notorious ignitions. Your tumblers may be out of whack. If all else fails, locksmiths are expensive.

I am haveing the same problem I put the key in an i have to play with it before it will unlock the sterring wheel an let me start the car. If you get an answer please let me know.

I was told that it may not be the ignition that there is a lock out system on it that could be bad you know any thing about that
