i'll assume this question is derived from America, cause in Australia we are not allowed to own a firearm. If you have a criminal record, you are less likley to be able to obtain one legally. You might be able to obtain one, but im not sure if you will be able to aquire it legally. The laws are different in Australia. Although, re-reading your question, they may take into account the 'non - violent' felony imposed on you. There are many mitigating factors. But as i said, it's different in Australia -Amy

I heard that it was 7 years and then you could own a gun. You will probably have to buy it second hand though because dealers will have to run you through a federal check. The best way to find out is try to purchase one and see. Or ask a gun dealer.

Each state has it's owns laws regarding this issue. Some states can and do reinstate firearms to convicted felons.
