To do the job the right way, you're asking about a very labor-intensive, time-consuming job. You have to remove everything from that floor. To get rid of the dings, scratches and gouges, power sand the floor down to the bare wood. Then you have to apply at least 3 to 4 coats of clear, water-based polyurethane. The poly-urethane is allowed to thoroughly dry between each coat. Then using the power sander again - with a very fine steel wool head or attachment, you have to "scratch-up" the floor. Then to get up all those tiny particles from the steel wool and the dried poly-urethane, damp mop the floor. Repeat the process 3 or 4 times. When you walk on the floor, use socks - no shoes or sneakers. There are socks which are skid and slip-resistant. About once every 2 years, scratch-up the floor again and re-apply one coat of clear poly-urethane. Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it! VTY, Ron Berue Yes, that is my real last name!
