A 1940 film titled "Knute Rockne, All American," featured Ronald Reagan in the role of George 'The Gipper' Gipp," a nickname which persisted for the rest of his life. George Gipp was a famous college football player who played at the University of Notre Dame, and the previously mentioned film is a biography of Knute Rockne, one of the most famous Notre Dame football coaches of all time.
He played the Gipper in the Knute Rockne story filmed in the 40's.
