If-God forbid-Senator Tim Johnson dies, do you think the governor of South Dakota will choose a Democrat or a Republican to the post?

    I would hope he'd choose the best person for the position regardless of party. But that is probably hoping for a bit much of any politician. (regardless of party)

    Yes the Republican governor will appoint a Republican U.S. Senator.

    The Senate will be split, and the Vice President will cast the tiebreaker.

      Yes, he will most likely choose a Democrat or a Republican.  He could choose a Libertarian or a Green, or someone from some even more obscure party, but most likely, he'd choose a Democrat or a Republican.
