  • It's called stereotyping. People who stereotype tend to do so as their way to classify a certain group of people with similarities. Often times when a geographical location has alot of people that exhibit similarities that are noticeable by many, the region itself will be stereotyped. It's all subjective really. Examples similar to what you have mentioned... New Yorkers are fast paced & have tougher attitudes Girls from South Philly have big hair, and guys from South Philly say "Yo!" Delawareans below the canal are "slower & lower" conversely, above the canal are city folk. Texans are gun totin' oil mongers. Etc. etc.
  • Yes, it's an overgeneralization. But, it's true that we tend to conform to what is socially acceptable and prevalent around us. For example, I live in Georgia, US, in a suburban / rural area. I have good friends who moved here years ago from a large city. They said that they were impressed by how people in this area smiled, made eye contact and said hello. Before long, my friends were in the habit of doing the same. Years later, they returned to that city to visit friends and said that everyone there seemed 'rude', since they wouldn't make eye contact or say hello. ??? But, it was just the norm for the area. If you lived there, sooner or later you'd probably conform.
