  • In ancient times, Jews were prohibited from drinking wine that had been used for any idolatrous practice. This is called "Yayin Nesech". Later, as a precuationary measure, the Sages forbade wine that was even touched by an idolator. This is called "Stam Yeinam". Practically this led to a custom, which remains till today, not to drink wine that was not produced under supervision of a rabbi or kosher supervisor (i.e. someone familiar with the relevant kosher laws who can attest that the wine has not been produced/ handled by the wrong people). Kosher wine carries a symbol indicating that it's been supervised properly.
