Lewes is a lovely place, I used to go through it quite often on the way to Newhaven and Brighton. I did a quick web search and find there are 7 Lewes bonfire societies. Amazing. But effigy of the Pope? this is not the normal Nov 5th celebration. It's usually "the Guy" which is burned. The Guidio Fawkes, the poor sod who took the rap for the conspiracy against the crown. And if one of the societies does burn the Pope in effigy (which I doubt), then the Pope is welcome to object and petition the British parliament (or failing that, Lewes town council) to outlaw the celebrations.

The filthy heathen anglicans shouldn't be permitted to have any incendiaries what so ever!

Oddly enough (for myself), I think it should be allowed, IF the effigy is a generic pope or the pope of the Guy Fawkes period. That would be historically correct. If the effigy was made to look like the current pope, no.

Yes. And the reason is contained in the question. "In this day and age" political correctness rules - except on November 5th every year in Lewes. People openly burn effigies, drink beer on the streets and throw bangers. Sussex Police, to their eternal credit, turn a blind (sorry, partially-sighted) eye. Everyone has a great time, there is surprisingly little trouble and we get a glimpse of how fun life used to be - at least for one evening.
