You're reading I JUST deleted a 5.96 GB folder from my computer, and no sooner than I did, did my computer report 'free space 5.02 GB'. There were a few hundred megs free to begin with to boot! There's over a gigabyte missing! Where did my memory go??? Windows XP.

It has nothing to do with the recycle bin. Anything 4 gigabytes or more I delete says "the following item is too large to fit in the recycle bin. Permanently delete?" And as this was most certainly over 4 gigabytes, that's what happened. I pressed "ok" or "yes" or whatever it was, and it was never IN the recycle bin, it was permanently deleted right away. And then I went back and forward a directory and when it refreshed the space available, there it was, 5.02 gigs free. The recycle bin was and IS still empty.

right click on the recycle bin and click properties, next slide the slider to the end (make sure your on the Global Tab) right and make sure it says 100% under the slider, now you can hold a Lot more inside the bin and also since you are there you can also disable the delete warning if you want to.. :)
