Agree - also i think if people were not burdened by credit card debt they would have the leverage to make demands

sorry to disagree but unions have not destroyed American businesses at all... its the greed of the bosses and shareholders that have done that quite well and the great AMERICAN business tradition of "why build a better product when we can just buy out the opposition"

What? Does a line worker at an auto plant need to make $75 an hour plus mandatory overtime? I don't think so. Do you think that keeps prices down and American goods more competitive? No. Please explain your "greed" hypocrisy. So it's OK for the union to demand more profit (salary and benefits), but when the company the provides the job shouldn't share the profits with the people that fund that company?
I have a feeling this is just some sort of class envy.

This talks about the last UAW attack on GM:
GM and the union praised the agreement, with the company saying it goes a long way toward cutting about a $25-per-hour labor cost gap between GM and Japanese automakers with U.S. factories. GM has said it pays workers $73.26 an hour in wages and benefits. The company lost $2 billion last year and is in the midst of a restructuring.
--
So, Japanese auto companies pay their workers $25 an hour less than we do and GM lost $2 BILLION in 2006 and the corporate leaders are greedy????????

think you will find the reason the U.S. auto industry is in the shit is because of 2 things #1 they tried to buy out all other auto makers in the world and before you say bullshit I would check if I was you as to how many foreign auto makers they brought out in the last 20 years , #2 is simple ...they have NOT made a decent product in the last 20 years , and I have no problems with any company who makes a profit they have to ...but obscene profits at the expense of everything else is wrong and while they have lost money in the last few years its the bosses fault they have done so with shit planning and products ... not the workers fault at all
by buxtonite ..slowly losing my mind on February 1st, 2008
they have put out inferior products, I drive a Nissan.
--
where have the profits been? If the US auto industry is in such disrepair, why is the union forcing more money from them? Why not be damned greteful to have a job in the first place?
The bosses are the "workers" too. That is a level the of classism that I was talking about. Somehow once you go past a point, in your eyes, one does not "work" they "manage" or do what "fatcats" do.
Classify me: I make $100+ a year, have a college degree and am in the management structure of my company - Do i "work"?
by Someguy on February 1st, 2008
so the bosses who made all these screw ups can get pay rises and promotions and thats ok is it? and the workers get there wages and conditions cut ..and thats ok is it? and sorry but once you reach top management they seem to be untouchable even though its their fuck ups that have put the companies in this position ... bloody fair ...bullshit not on your life !
by buxtonite ..slowly losing my mind on February 1st, 2008
Whether CEOs of failing companies deserve pay raises is a different argument. You are back to arguing classism now and not unions.
i can pick from just about anybody in general society and make them a line worker. can you pick just about anybody and have them run the company? Don't think so.
-- What is fairness? Where does fair exist in the world? When you find it, save me place.
by Someguy on February 1st, 2008
so in your eyes its ok for the workers to pay for the bosses screw ups time after time and sorry but judging from how the bosses have preformed I would say yes a trained monkey could do a better job and yes ANY one can be a boss if they have common sense
by buxtonite ..slowly losing my mind on February 1st, 2008
"bosses" get fired all the time - I just don't want you supporting unions because some corporate elitists get away with doing a bad job.
You are preaching classism, pure and simple.
by Someguy on February 1st, 2008
no I am preaching a fair go for all not just the upper end of town ... and that $75 per hour... how much of that does the worker actually get in their pay packet...if they are Lucky $10 the rest goes to greedy insurance companies and health funds again don't blame the worker for wanting basic and I do mean basic conditions
by buxtonite ..slowly losing my mind on February 1st, 2008
what? you have got to be kidding me - how much is enough for you? $75 an hour is 150,000 a year!! - for working on an auto line!!
by Someguy on February 1st, 2008
your dreaming no line worker gets anywhere near that ...GM was talking about how much it costs them per hour per man/woman... not how much per hour each of them gets in wages and again most of that $75 goes to health and insurance covers
by buxtonite ..slowly losing my mind on February 1st, 2008
In the avergage corporate setting, only 20% of the total compensation package is benefits - let's say the UAW is on the high side at 25% - that is 18.75 per hour and leaves $56.25 per hour (which is about right) - factor in the taxes and the employee cost of insurance and you're looking at about $43 an hour remaining and that is about how much a UAW auto worker takes home per hour - look it up and quit being ignorant
by Someguy on February 1st, 2008
so your saying a line worker gets between $2,330 and $3,000 U.S. per week?
by buxtonite ..slowly losing my mind on February 1st, 2008
which is close to $2,600 and $3,600 Australian per week
by buxtonite ..slowly losing my mind on February 1st, 2008
I think if you did a little research, the "unions have destroyed American Business" is a farce. While GM was complaining about Union workers and blaming them for their decline (they have lost money for the last five years) they were building new plants in China and Mexico. these were state of the art plants tha used less workers, and the workers had to do less. they never upgraded the plants in the US, so in many plants you still have people that have to manually move parts from one line to another, or still have manual wielders. (my father was one), in addition if you look at the medium income and standards of living in the US from 1955-2000, there has been a steady decline in the standard of living that corresponds with the steady decline of Union jobs. however there has been a steady increase in the wages of the CEO's. Oh, and what happen to the pension plans, scraped them for a 401K that invest money right back into the company you work for. BIG SCAM
