Is it legal for an employer to make you take a drug test before you're hired? Do they have to say exactly what they are testing for?

    It is, indeed, legal for an employer to make passing a drug test a condition of employment. Your right to privacy isn't being trampled because if you want to retain the privacy, you don't try to get the job.

    An employer that is drug testing probably is testing for all the common drugs in your area. They aren't required by law to tell you what drugs they are screening for.

    • The Supreme Court has said employers may test as a condition, and may randomly test during employment.
