It is usually illegal. The owners of the TV shows have licensed certain uses of their shows. In particular, they have licensed to broadcasters to transmit them X times within a specified period - and that is all. When someone records a TV show, that is like photocopying a book. And when you download the show from the net, that is like making another copy

TV is certainly not free - you just don't realise when you are paying for it. TV is paid for by adverts (or, in the case of the BBC, the TV license). Adverts are paid for by advertisers, who load the cost onto their products. You pay this cost when you buy their advertising. Approximately $1000 of the cost of a new care is advertising - not all TV, of course. And approximately $0.50 on a packet of disposable diapers. So you are paying for TV every day of your life - even if you don't watch it.

If you download the programs, you don't watch the ads. So the advertisers stop paying, so the broadcasters don't have any money. Broadcasters won't go away, but the programs will just get cheaper and nastier. So if your favourite show goes off the air, it may be because you were downloading instead of watching. (Doesn't worry me - it has already got so bad I don't watch any more).
