Art Garfunkel. Check out 2 songs to see why I think so. "Bridge Over Troubled Water", and the live version of "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her". His voice is so strong and clean. I get actual chills down my spine when hearing either of these two songs.

I understand that everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, but some of these answers are simply outrageous! First and foremost there has NEVER been an artisit male or female that could master any song and make it their own other than Aretha Franklin. There is no artist in history who could take a note where ever they wanted too and still be in complete control of it once it returned to earth! Aretha by far is the greatest singer ever. Period. Elvis, please..he was a performer not a singer! There's a big difference!

There have been many great singers, and we are blessed to have them all. But if I can quote Bruce Springsteen when he inducted this person into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, "No one sings like ROY ORBISON!" In the rock and roll heaven the Righteous Brothers sang about, they draw lots to see who has to follow him at the concerts!
-
WHITNEY HOUSTON. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.
-
Well, in rock and roll, it's gotta be Robert Plant, maybe not the greatest classical voice out there, but by far the most unique and innovative sounding singing rock and roll has ever seen. My vote for the greatest is probably Jeff Buckley, I just don't understand why he doesn't get more credit, probably because he died so very young. The one album he was able to release, however is the greatest vocal performance of all time, and if you've never heard it, listen... (especially Corpus Christi Carol, I mean, are you kidding me?? what a performance)
-
Plant for rock and roll purposes, not exactly the greatest classical or technical abilities, but my favorite of all time. The best ever, in my opinion, is Jeff Buckley. No man could do what he did on Grace, the greatest vocal album perfomance of all time (and unfortunately, his only)

you guys are all idiots. Aretha, Xtina, Britney, Tina Turner, Whitney, they would all rupture their intestines if they tried to sing Queen of the Night's Aria like Sarah Brightman. If you want to hear a real woman sing, check that song out.

The best male singer I've heard, and I listen to ALL kinds (from the '80s to Country) has to be Aaron Lewis from Staind. He has such a luminous voice, he can't sing a bad song.

Hands down, the greatest male vocalist (singer) of all time is Frank Sinatra - style, phrasing, emotion, and orchestration. Everyone else only aspires to be in this strategem.
-
neither. Cedric bixler. of the mars volta.

Female: Dame Shirley Bassey - If you measure by Technical vocal ability, including vocal projection, range, vabrato, and holding those big notes! Now in her 70's, she is still performing those difficult songs, live, which is something many of her counterparts tend to shy away from. (ie, Youtube: Shirley Bassey - The Living Tree) Everything else gets down to ones personal favorite which has nothing to do with the word, 'Best'

Of all singers, for males, it is Nat King Cole. Of all females, Ella Fitzgerald. Of all time, for rock, I vote for Freddie Mercury of Queen. All my favorite singers are dead. My lovely wife, Jennifer, just wants me to add that her vote for greatest female singer of all time is none other than Stacy Q (one hit wonder who sang "Two of Hearts")...yeah, my wife was just kidding!

However these are some of the artists that would be considered for the title: Michael Jackson, Whitney Housten, Frank Sinatra, Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Luciano Pavarotti, Elvis Presley. There are probably many more that are at the same level vocally as the singers ive listed, feel free to add to my list if you think ive left anyone out.

Karen Carpenter. Rich, smooth, unusual, and very pleasant sounding. She had "radio voice"---when you hear her on the radio or other sound system, it sounds like she is "live" in the room with you. I have never heard another female voice like hers since, and I really doubt we will ever hear that kind of unique voice again. :(
-
There are too many great singers from too many genre to choose just one. Some of the best in my opinion: Freddie Mercury Judy Garland David Bowie Dean Martin Jim Nabors Roger Daltrey Annie Lennox Marni Nixon

7-28-2017 Julio Iglesias was the most popular singer in the world before anybody in the USA heard of him. Willie Nelson was second best.
-
Johnny Mathis for romanitic songs by a male. Janis Joplan for soulful female songs.
