They didn't. Q-Tips still creates cotton swabs on wooden sticks. They also create them on paper sticks.

Yes, they're still making wooden Q-Tips, but they're practically impossible to find. Other than the occasional Ebay-er, the only official source - according to the makers of Q-Tips, Chesebrough-Pond's USA - is Drugstore*dot*com. And they're expensive: more than $4.00 per box of 125. And the reason for their scarcity is that they're not well liked by environmentalists. They disapprove of the cellophane wrapper around the box, not the wooden shaft.

You can get single tipped medical quality wooden q-tips from www.woodqtips.com or www.woodenqtips.com

I found something almost as good. Wooden Cotton Swabs The swabs and the box they come in are of the same design as "real" Q-tips. That is, cotton on both ends, 125 swabs in the box, etc. Availabe here in Tallahassee at CVS Pharmacy. The cost is $3.29 per box. Works for me!

Wooden Cotton Swabs are just as good and you can search on that name and find many locations that sell them. Natures-favor.com for $9.99 for three boxes. Shipping is $7.50 and they take pay pal.

i can't believe the environmentalist reason for their scarcity. i can believe it is a liability issue. wood q-tips are too rigid and can much more easily cause damage to the ear drum as their paper and plastic counterparts. problem is, because they bend so easily, cleaning your ear with a paper or plastic q-tip is about effective as pushing a rope. the laughable part is the q-tip people now say their product is not to be used in the ear canal. why would you need a q-tip to clean the outside of your ear? the whole point of sticking a piece of cotton on the end of a stick is to clean hard-to-reach places. i paid a lot for the hard to find wooden beauties and used to stockpile them, but now i think i have a much simpler and cheaper solution.... cut the plastic versions in half and slide in the hollow tube something to make it rigid. something of course with a blunt end that won't go thru the cotton tip. i am using a 2mm L shaped allen wrench. awesome and you get all the leverage you need!

Just a thought - the paper shaft box is wrapped in the same cellophane wrapper as the wooden ones. I'm not certain that this is the reason. An earlier comment about liability would seem to be more on target. But that's just my $0.02 worth...
