  • The way I understand it, you can be an absolutely HORRIBLE person right up until you ask sincerely for forgiveness from God, the Universe, or whatever your higher power is called by you. I'm not so sure I would want to cut it that close, though. Think of all the good I could have accomplished had I not wasted my life being an ass.
  • Well, all we have to do is look at the ten commandments. If you believe in heaven and hell, you most likely believe in the ten commandments, and there is a clear stating that you should not covet thy neighbors wife, or commit adultery. Too many people assume that GOD is a fool, and that they can do whatever they want to do because if they ask for forgiveness afterwards, he'll grant it to them. My thing is, if you do do something, like murder, or commit adultery, or something along those lines, you must TRULY be sorry for it, and not just be trying to pull a fast one on GOD.

The guilt, whether it comes immediately or years later, will drive you insane. That is unless the cheater has no heart or remorse at all then that's a separate kind of hell all it's own.

  • I don't believe that, in general, people go to Hell period. We are human beings. We make mistakes. IF God exists, he/she/it ought to be aware of this and allow us our transgressions. However, I think there's a difference between making a mistake and learning from it, and repeating the same mistake infinitely because you refuse to evolve from an infantile state of ignorance. Ultimately, those who repeat their mistakes are putting themselves into their own psychological Hell.

  • I'm not too sure what the afterlife holds for those who do evil. In Asatru, we do believe to a large extent that "we are our deeds", but we're not overly concerned with the afterlife. We hold to the Nine Noble Virtues (or other similar concepts) which are Courage, Truth, Honour, Fidelity, Hospitality, Discipline, Industriousness, Self-Reliance, and Perseverance. There's no need for salvation or redemption. Just don't be such a jerk next time, and make ammends as best you can to the injured party. If you do your best in this life, then the next one will take care of itself. With regards to cheating on a spouse, it seems to go against more than one Noble Virtue, so it's certainly something to be avoided, and I don't think many deities would look favourably upon it.

  • Just for cheating? Maybe not. [although in the case of my cheating ex, i wouldn't be opposed to the idea.] I think it is more that cheating is just one action of a not-so-good person. I find that yes, cheating can be an isolated incident, but in most cases it is just another example of how this person doesn't deserve what they have, and that cheating is just another item on their list of bad deeds. My ex cheated, but that was probably not as bad as the manipulation, lies, and rumors he spread behind my back.
