A mason is a craftsman who works with stones, a freemason is a member of a fraternity for middle-aged and old men. The "free" part comes from the fact(?) that that freemasonry started in the middle ages when castles were constructed by a lord's peasants/serfs/peons, who were indebted to the lord, but the design of the castles were made by masons who worked on contract and in contrast to the peasants, free.

since the mason originally havent had the restriction over guilds had, they where able to reglement and organise themselves hence the name FREEmason but still they had a whole bunch of rules and dutys but to travel freely throuh europe was only one benefit of their art
